The Power of Playback

Now you have recognised what inner interruptions you have and how to bat them away through self-reflection, let’s focus on another tool that you can use whilst conversing to further ensure you have correctly heard what the person is saying and interpreted everything correctly (it’s a great one for clients!)- the tool is called Playback.

Having this tool in your toolbox and under your belt can really help build further understanding, connection and provide the speaker/ client with the opportunity to hear their own words in a different way, allowing them the space to adjust, or reframe any key points. It’s a simple tool that can improve closing the conversation, improving the guarantee that you are moving in the right direction.

Do you have a key client meeting coming up, or an important conversation you want to close out with confidence? If so, why not try using the playback tool within your conversation and closing the conversation with the below?!

Closing structure

  1. Playback clients’ key desires/ objectives

  2. Playback any client concerns/obstacles

  3. Express any concerns or ask any questions you may have

  4. Once you have the answers, state the next steps you are going to take

Please note this doesn’t just have to be used for client conversations, you can amend the structure to playback key themes, issues, information or emotions that have been discussed!

REMEMBER: to take some time to reflect on the ways you have used this tool this week and make notes on how it felt and what you noticed in the process.
